LENT: A Journey to EASTER
Lent offers a wonderful opportunity for us all, to prepare for the great celebration of Easter in six weeks. The word ‘Lent’ originates from Old English, meaning ‘lengthening’ of days and symbolising spring renewal.
The 40-day period commemorates not only Jesus’ temptation, but also the 40 days Moses spent on Mount Sinai, the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the desert and the 40 days of rain during the flood. These events mark it as a significant time for preparation.
This year, Pope Leo’s Lenten Message encourages us to abstain from harsh words and rash judgements. He invites us to open ourselves to listening, fasting and community, urging us to replace hateful words with hopeful and peaceful ones. You can read his message here.
Please pray for all those adults who will be baptised at the Easter Vigil, as well as those already baptised, and those receiving full communion with the Catholic Church and the sacrament of Confirmation. Yesterday (Saturday) over 500 people, including those called to the Sacraments, were baptised at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, by Archbishop John Wilson.
On Easter Sunday we have the chance to renew our own baptismal promises. To hep us prepare, Lent offers a period of self-examination, allowing us to confront our sinfulness and deepen our personal relationship with the Father through Jesus. These six weeks are defined by three pillars:
- prayer (strengthening our relationship with God)
- fasting (self-denial)
- almsgiving (charity to others)
This time encourages reflection on the Cross’s significance in our lives. Every Friday at 6pm, we’ll have Stations of the Cross. Additionally, at 11:30 am before Mass, we’ll have the public recitation of the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary. Our Archbishop John has recorded a powerful reflection on the Cross; listen to it here.
Self-denial is crucial during this time, fostering greater awareness of others’ needs. This coming Friday, we’ll observe Family Fast Day. We are encouraged to eat simply and donate the savings to CAFOD (Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) to support projects like sustainable farming and clean water. This directly connects fasting with helping those in need.
Lord Jesus, fill me with your Spirit that, during this Lent, I may renew my mind and heart and that you will draw me closer to your love. Amen
