“A Place of Worship, Witness and Welcome Since 1875”
In 2025, our Parish marks a joyous milestone—150 years since our church opened its doors to the faithful in Canterbury.
This year offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our history, our parish community, and the faith that continues to thrive here.
Our Story: From Humble Beginnings to a Flourishing Parish
Catholic worship in Canterbury was re-established in 1855 when Mary Ann Wood gifted a house at 60 (now 59) Burgate Street to provide a home for a priest. Early Masses were celebrated in the priest’s home, until Fr Richard Power’s energy and vision led to the building of our church and a parish school.
Construction of the Gothic-style church began in 1874, designed by local architect John Green Hall, inspired by the work of E. W. Pugin. On 13th April 1875, the church was opened by Cardinal Henry Manning, Archbishop of Westminster.
