My Thoughts on 08/06/2021

We get many health warning about our use of salt. It is true that eating too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure, which is linked to conditions like heart failure and heart attack, kidney problems, fluid retention, stroke and osteoporosis.

Salt is actually an important nutrient for the human body. Our body uses salt to balance fluids in the blood and maintain healthy blood pressure, and it is also essential for nerve and muscle function. It’s impossible to live a life without any salt. If we do we will die.

Salt was used to preserve food and it heals. In cooking it is used to bring out the flavours of the food.

Jesus reminds us in today’s Gospel that we are the salt of the earth.

In what ways am I salt of the earth? Do I preserve what it good? Am I a healing presence in peoples lives? Do I draw out what is best in others?

Lord in my family and community may I be salt, preserving good ways of living, healing what has been contaminated, and drawing out from others their hidden beauty.
