My Thoughts on 21/05/2021

I have fond memories of visiting the traditional site where Jesus, after the resurrection, made breakfast for the apostles and asked Peter three times “Do you love me?” This came to me as i read today’s gospel from John 21. This area is known as Tabgha. Here there is the small Church of the Primacy of Peter and a modern statue depicting Peter kneeling in front of Jesus. Jesus calls Peter to “feed my lambs”, “look after my sheep” and to follow him.

During this Easter season the Church encourages us to reflect on the gift of the Eucharist. Note how often Jesus is depicted eating with his disciples and teaching them during a meal. Jesus becomes for us food that nourishes and sustains us. Hundreds of people followed Jesus because they were like sheep without a shepherd. They were hungry and Jesus fed them with his word, that was life giving.

We pray everyday “Give us this day our daily bread.” The spiritual hunger that people experience today can only be satisfied by Jesus, as living word and the bread of life.

Let us answer the call of Jesus to follow him by providing this life-giving food to others, be it our children, our families, those we live with and the hungry world
